"All the eastern peaks of the range consist of Cambrian quartzite and on walking south along the ridge to Sgurr nan Fhir Duibhe the weird pinnacles or Black Carls are soon encountered and will be noticed to be in an advanced state of erosion. These are passed with care whence the ridge narrows on the approach to this peak where the pinnacles afford no difficulty save that of a 30 foot pitch near the top which is more easily ascended than descended."

Mr Poucher, in my view, underestimates the difficulties for the moderate hill walker. This section of the ridge is probably more difficult, though considerably shorter, than the Pinnacle ridge on Liathach - the more so because a lot of the quartzite blocks, visible in this picture, are loose and extreme care must be taken to avoid dislodging them. I have not actually been here on a clear day, but I have reason to believe that the west side of this section is very precipitous.
